Mental Health Week in Valence, France : Documentary “Vivre en Ville” by Cécile Philippin

Dear readers,

Yesterday, I went to one of the first events of the Mental Health Week in my current city, Valence.

It was a projection of a documentary called “Vivre en Ville” (Living in the City) by Cécile Philippin, who also directed another documentary titled “Les Voix de ma soeur” (My Sister’s Voices), which was about her sister and how she dealt with mental illness.

General information on mental illness

Mental illnesses are disorders that affect a person’s mental health. They can be diagnosed when they affect the sufferer’s life, putting them in one of the situations of the 4 D’s of abnormality : distress, dysfunction, deviance, or danger.

They can be divided into the following categories, which is a non exhaustive list of the main mental illnesses:

  • Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Depression
  • Schizoaffective Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Anxiety Disorders, which include Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Eating Disorders, which include Anorexia and Bulimia
  • Addictive Disorders

To recover, mental illness usually have to combine therapy and medication. Medication is delivered by psychiatrists and therapy is provided by therapists.

In addition, one of the most important things to find a path to recovery is having a good support system.Support from family and friends can make a huge difference in helping a mental illness sufferer reaching more mental stability.
